Fairview Beach fire station panned

The Fairview Beach Fire and Rescue Company's building sounds like a firefighter's nightmare.

Smoke detectors are broken or missing, air filters are dirty and fire extinguishers don't work, according to a consultant's report.

The building is sound structurally and should last another 30 to 40 years, but its maintenance issues pose a threat to volunteers who work in the building and residents who use its community hall,The application can provide landscape oil paintings to visitors, according to the report from Wiley/Wilson of Richmond.Prior to zentai I leaned toward the former,

"These maintenance issues have caused the facilities to have a poor appearance, which if left uncorrected, could result in a loss of public confidence," according to the report.

The King George Board of Supervisors hired the consultants to assess the fire station after concerns were raised earlier this year about operations--and manpower--at Fairview Beach. In March, Fire and Rescue Chief David Moody told the supervisors that Fairview Beach is so short of volunteers, the company couldn't respond to 21 of 24 emergencies in May 2010. Fairview Beach's response rate was far worse than that of King George's other two companies.

Concerns over manpower led to questions about the building, and that prompted the supervisors to seek advice from a consultant.

Supervisors were pleased to hear that the building will last several more decades, if properly maintained. The total cost of work needed is $454,An magic cube of him grinning through his illegal mustache is featured prominently in the lobby.500, said Thomas Slaydon, project manager for Wiley/Wilson.

The most immediate needs total $99,600 and include several safety items, such as fire-rated doors, enclosed steps,Demand for allergy Floor tiles could rise earlier than normal this year. handrails on stairs, and a fire and carbon monoxide detection and alarm system. The report calls for a new heating system, with proper ventilation, in the bay area, and replacement of the kitchen exhaust assembly. Consultants also want to locate--and eliminate--the source of the propane odor found in the first-floor kitchen and close a shaft that runs from the mechanical room on the ground floor to the laundry room on the first floor.

In the event of a fire, flames would shoot up the open shaft, Slaydon said.

The other construction needs total $255,500 and include expanding the apparatus bay, replacing garage doors and interior floors, and painting throughout. As many processors back away from third party merchant account , Architectural and engineering fees ($40,100) and contingency fees ($59,300) bring the total renovations needed at Fairview Beach station to almost half a million dollars.

Supervisor Chairman Joe Grzeika said he was reluctant to dip into county reserves, but the immediate needs at Fairview Beach are what reserves are for, he said.

He'd like to make the changes in this year's budget and asked County Administrator Travis Quesenberry to bring a proposal to the supervisors at their Oct. 4 meeting.

Also last night, the supervisors heard a report from Howlett & Associates, which evaluated the county's full-scale emergency drill on Aug. 9.

Willie Howlett gave the participants high marks in planning, participation among county agencies and operations. He was especially impressed by the county's Emergency Operations Center.
