While the U.S. used to be the world leader for education, according
to a 2012 report from Pearson, we are now ranked 17th, passed by Hong
Kong, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Germany, and Poland, among
others. Finland took the top spot. While there is no silver bullet to
reclaiming our place as the top educator in the world, we cannot hope to
make it back to the top without starting early.
The HighScope
Perry Preschool Study, which followed participants for almost 40 years,
found that those who were enrolled in a quality preschool program were
more likely to graduate high school, own homes, stay married longer, and
have higher incomes later in life. And the HighScope Perry Preschool
Study is not the only one to give similar results. The Carolina
Abecedarian Project studied children from low-income families and placed
them in full-day, high-quality educational settings from infancy
through age five. The Abecedarian Project participants, at age 30, had
significantly more education than those in a control group and were
four-times more likely to have earned a college degree. Participants in
the early education group also were more likely to be employed, less
likely to have used public-assistance, and not have children as young as
those in the control group.
Both of these studies, as well as
others have found that the long-term benefits of preschool may well be
increased social responsibility, but the positive social results could
be argued to be greater than higher test standardized test

of Early Education Research, during the 2010-2011 school year, the
national average for public preschool attendance among four-year-olds
was 28%. Many states that offer some form of public preschool have done
so only for disadvantaged families, which is the same goal as what
President Obama has proposed. While only 28% of four-year-olds may have
been enrolled in a publically funded preschool during the 2010-2011
school year that number is double what is was in 2002.
Five
states go further with a goal of enrolling every four-year-old in
preschool. Georgia and Oklahoma were the first states to offer universal
preschool, and are among the top states with regard to attendance. In
2002, Florida passed legislation making it mandatory for every
four-year-old to have access to publically funded preschool (the program
did not begin until 2005), and while attendance is voluntary, as of the
2010-2011 school year, Florida had the large attendance rate for

There
are a wide range of programs across the country for preschool, and
while the extent to which public funding is available for early
childhood education varies, only 11 states do not have a state-funded

five of them were in the bottom 20% of Education Week’s annual State
Report Card grades. And while not having a publically funded preschool
program does not preclude a state’s education system from scoring higher
(Hawaii was 16th out of 51) the two factors combined may show and
overall attitude regarding the importance of education in some states.
The
call and push for publically funded preschools is not just a liberal
spending idea either. Alabama’s republican governor, Robert Bentley is
the latest to join in the call, joining other traditionally red states,
including Florida, Georgia and Oklahoma, that have already made
universal publically funded preschool part of their educational system.

Art circles throughout the nation and as far as Canada and Mexico recognize the remote, desert city of San Angelo as the host of the mecca of ceramic competitions.San Angelo's Ceramic Weekend of activities — a cooperative venture between the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts,VulcanMold is a plastic molds and Injection Molding manufacturer in china. Of those entries, 106 works by 87 artists were selected to be exhibited, and the winners among those will be announced during the Nineteenth San Angelo National Ceramic Competition opening April 20.

"I think the first year, years ago, we had 200 people, then 300" at the opening, Taylor said. "We had 2,000 (attend) the last time, so that's incredible. It really has grown."
Hernandez credited the event's renown to Taylor's reputation in the art world.

The show is the biggest of its kind in America, Taylor said, and is unique because it draws both new and established artists to compete.
"The show has such a reputation and the jurors are always (such) leading people in the art world that even established artists like to get their name in front of them," Taylor said. Serious artists also strive to have their work shown at a museum, so appearing in the largest show of its kind in America is "the big-time," he said.
The museum prints a call for entries for the competition in national art magazines, including Ceramics Monthly, American Crafts and Clay Times. Those publications and others also feature write-ups about the competition.

Stepping up to a bright idea
At first I wasn't sure I was reading the CNN report correctly. The story hinged on special pavement that uses the impact of human feet to generate electricity.
That's right. A young man in Britain has invented a device that harvests the energy from a footfall hitting the pavement to power things like LED lights.
Talk about a bright idea.
The "PaveGen" project is the brainchild of Laurence Kemball-Cook, age 25 years. He's an engineer who built a prototype of the device during his last year in school and is now working to make and market his creation.
The PaveGen tiles work because they have a bit of "give" in them. When you step on one, it's depressed a little bit by your body weight. That motion can be used to generate a small but measurable bit of electricity. If the paving tiles are in an area of heavy foot traffic — like the stairs down to a subway station — in total they can make enough electricity for some useful applications.
Using human muscle to generate electricity is not completely new. I've seen students in teaching demonstrations pedaling hard on stationary bikes to light up a relatively low-watt light. In short, it takes a lot of oomph to power a standard bulb — us old ladies need not apply for any job requiring that much work on a regular basis.
But walking is one of the most efficient things we humans can do. And by stepping on the paver of the PaveGen devise, a person exerts considerable downward force — full body weight. Each step on one of the pavers generates enough juice to power an LED bulb for 30 seconds. The generating device can be linked to a battery to even out the flow of the electrical current between footfalls.
Kemball-Cook had a second bright idea as he designed his device. In addition to contributing electric power to devices outside the paver, he engineered the tiles to retain 5 percent of their oomph. That bit of power is used to light up a LED bulb in the paver itself. This means the device lights up as you walk in it, giving you positive feedback that you're really making electricity as you walk across the pavement. People really like that,It's hard to beat the versatility of polished tiles on a production line. it's clear from the news reports.

The pavers have already been tested at a school in southeast Britain.

US solar panel industry could fail
A Republican House chairman blasted the solar industry Thursday, calling loans to solar panel manufacturers, such as ill-fated Solyndra Inc., a poor bet and predicting the solar panel industry itself could collapse in the United States.
An industry group immediately disputed the remark by Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., citing a report showing that solar panel installations were up nearly 70 percent in the second quarter of 2011,The application can provide landscape oil paintings to visitors, compared with the same period last year.

The Obama administration said the solar industry and renewable energy in general were crucial to economic growth and job creation.
The debate over solar came as Issa's committee released a report titled, "How Obama's Green Energy Agenda is Killing Jobs." The report criticizes what it calls questionable accounting methods used by the Obama administration to count "green jobs" and says the term is vague and poorly defined.
"A green jobs-fueled recovery is a theory, and is yet unproven," Issa said. "There is a lot more green, in the way of cash, and a lot less energy and jobs than anticipated."
Democrats assailed the report, saying Issa had offered no evidence that the Obama administration was killing jobs. Rep. Gerald Connolly, D-Va.Prior to zentai I leaned toward the former,, called the report intellectually dishonest and said its title showed Issa's "raw, partisan" agenda.
In reality, oil, coal and other fossil fuels receive more than 80 percent of federal energy subsidies, Connolly said.
Much of the committee's hearing Thursday was mired in partisan disputes, including a lengthy debate over whether the driver of a hybrid bus qualified as holding a green job. Rep. Connie Mack, R-Fla., said the bus might be green, but not the driver.
"If I'm sitting in a chair that was made out of green material, does that make my job green?" Mack asked Labor Secretary Hilda Solis.
Solis first said the driver qualified because the hybrid bus is fuel-efficient. Keith Hall, commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, later clarified that all bus drivers hold green jobs, since they work in mass transit. "We have a choice to make," Poneman told Issa's committee. "We can compete successfully in the global marketplace — creating American jobs and selling American products — or we can resign ourselves to importing more of the technologies of tomorrow from abroad."

Alcohol named top stress reliever
People would much prefer to unwind with a bottle of wine than spend time with their children or partner, according to a snapshot survey.
Some 61% of adults said drinking was their top choice after a stressful day, while 28% said spending time with their children helped them relax and 26% opted for talking with their partner.
The small poll of 825 adults, for the industry-funded charity Drinkaware, found people battle stress with up to four drinks on a typical evening at home.
More women than men (73% versus 26%) said stress was the main reason they had a drink at home at the end of the day, and 73% of women said they typically pour themselves a glass of wine to relax.
Some 61% of women surveyed have two or more large glasses of wine on a typical night - more than double the recommended daily unit guidelines for women. And 61% of men drink at least two pints of beer (around four units) on an average evening at home.These girls have never had a cube puzzle in their lives!
Among both sexes, 61% admit to drinking after a stressful experience and 73% after a bad day at work.
