100 years old and counting

In the sweet was and was — yet still not a great long time ago — Worthington residents, along with residents of every community in America, went to their downtowns day by day to climb stairs. They climbed stairs to second-story offices of doctors and dentists, attorneys and insurance agents. There was as much business and activity in the second levels as there was at the ground level.

I was thinking of this lately when I went to the Hotel Thompson to learn how the grand old twins are faring. I say “grand old twins” for the Thompson is a pair of identical buildings joined by a great lobby.

The Thompson is the most spectacular business venture ever undertaken in downtown Worthington. I stood before the old hotel one morning this week and thought of second levels and of stairways. The Thompson has more stairways than any building in town and it was built in three stories, three levels, which makes it still the most imposing structure in Worthington’s historic business district.

Out of circulation, 'Phx Bux' coins become novelty items

It was a comfortably warm day in downtown Phoenix as Crystal Botella sat on Jobot Coffee Shop’s patio and drank from a can of root beer with a straw stuck in it.

The Arizona native was dressed in a colorful sundress, with earrings made out of “Phx Bux” coins dangling from her ears.

Botella comes to Fifth Street almost every day and observes local artists coming and going. She, too, is an artist. She creates the book thongs, earrings and key chains that are sold at Lawn Gnome Publishing.

“They are a part of Phoenix history,” Botella said.

Phx Bux are now a rare commodity in Phoenix since they went out of circulation a few years ago. Botella has roughly 100 left.

The coins were local currency that business partners Joey Grether and John Sagasta launched in summer 2009. The currency was accepted by at least 25 Phoenix businesses.

Participating businesses paid $1 per coin and pledged to accept Phx Bux in addition to traditional forms of payment. Customers could request their change in Phx Bux and take coins to other stores that accepted Phx Bux, where the coins were worth $1. The majority of shops allowed only one coin per purchase.

But creating the local currency proved to be time-consuming.

“Paper would have been ideal,” Grether said.

Grether created Phx Bux to challenge Phoenicians to rethink local currency and who is actually controlling their money.

“I think that if someone thought to trade (Phx Bux) for services or necessities, they would have lasted a lot longer,” Rabat said. “They mostly worked like coupons. I used them for coffee but don’t recall buying art with them.”

Chadwick Uptain, a local artist, carved the original Phx Bux design and created the molds with the help of a former business partner. They created 3,500 coins.

Uptain still has the original sterling silver casting used to make the molds. Grether now owns many of the coins, sharing them occasionally, and has the original $2 design.

“The Phx Bux had the potential to be huge,” Uptain said. “I think it failed because the creators, John and Joey, began to realize that in order to maintain and grow such an ambitious project it was going to require a lot of work and money.Wireless Indoor Positioning System have become very popular in the system.”

Uptain wanted to create multiple coin denominations to generate revenue for advertising, marketing and networking but realized Grether was uncomfortable with the idea of making a profit or the risk of legal consequences.

“We were using it more like a coupon than currency, but if the feds decided to call it counterfeiting, there could have been trouble,” Uptain added.

Phx Bux have become a novelty item and are being collected by many people who appreciate the coins’ uniqueness and history.

Putting on the Pressure: 'No Heat' Way to Zap Pathogens

In the world of food safety, it's not just about food poisoning outbreaks and recalls. Sometimes there's some good news to share. That's the case in breakthroughs and advances in science and technology that can stop foodborne pathogens dead in their tracks. And sometimes that sort of news appears in unexpected places.

Take, for example, the January edition of Popular Mechanics. In a section about the "Ten Tech Concepts You Need to Know," readers learn that "this year's big ideas in tech will make your food safer, make hybrid cars more energy efficient, and sentence overpriced texting plans to death."

Right out of the gate, at the top of the list, is a USDA-approved food-safety process that the magazine refers to as "Pascalization," commonly known in the food industry as HPP, or high pressure processing. And while it's only been used on the commercial level for the past 2 decades or so, the technology has been around far longer than that.

What he came up with -- high pressure processing -- is what Popular Mechanics describes as "changing the way we think about food."

This process doesn't rely on heat, such as pasteurization; or chemicals, such as preservatives; or irradiation to kill the harmful bacteria on food. For the most part, the same is true of irradiation.

Under high pressure processing, already packaged products such as fresh hamburger and turkey; processed fruit such as apple sauce; oysters; fish; guacamole; and ready-to-eat meats such as sliced turkey, pastrami and beef are put inside a pressure chamber. Water is then added to the chamber before it is sealed. From there, the pressure is increased to the maximum desirable level and sustained for a set period of time. The chamber is then decompressed and drained and the packaged products are removed.

We're talking about a lot of pressure. For example, at sea level, air pressure is 14.4 pounds per square inch. In the case of products put under HPP, the pressure ranges from 60,000 to 87,000 pounds per square inch.

And while that sounds like enough pressure to squash or damage the packaged food, that doesn't happen because the pressure is applied equally on all areas of the product.

The good news is that the pressure zaps foodborne pathogens such as E. coli O157:H7, Listeria and Salmonella, as well as "spoilage" microorganisms such as molds and yeasts -- without affecting the nutritional qualities or the taste of the food products. That's because while it has enough force to significantly disrupt cellular activity, it doesn't affect the structures of the food components that are responsible for nutrition and flavor.

Another plus is that because HPP is applied when the products are already packaged, it eliminates the possibility of cross-contamination. In other words, the products are free of pathogens when they get to the customers, whether they be grocery shoppers, restaurants, schools or other institutions. Even so, people preparing the food must follow basic food-safety procedures, such as washing their hands and preventing cross-contamination with other foods or cooking utensils to keep the food safe from foodborne pathogens.

Last year when Food Safety News wrote about HPP, the big news was that meat-processing giant Cargill had introduced a patent-pending process for a new line of fresh hamburger patties produced under high pressure processing. At the time, the company hailed it as a "natural option for food safety" and a "technological breakthrough." Until then, no one had figured out how to use high pressure processing on fresh hamburger meat without affecting its taste, texture or appearance.

The patties were slated for the food service industry, with customers such as restaurants saying that they were looking for a "fresh hamburger" option with good shelf life. According to a news release from Cargill, the HPP burgers have double the shelf life of non-HPP burgers. Yet the fresh flavor stays intact and food safety is enhanced.

The company's name for these HPP burgers is "fressure." The idea is that the fressure logo could be used on restaurant menus so customers would know the burgers were fresh, not frozen. And while the label advised that the meat be cooked to 160 degrees, the "fressure" burgers gave cooks and chefs the option to cook them to lower temperatures and therefore satisfy customers who wanted medium-rare burgers, for example. Even so, restaurant menus are required to carry a warning that undercooked or uncooked meats and shellfish can pose a risk to human health.

At the time, long-time HPP researcher V.M. Balasubramaniam, Department of Food Science and Technology at Ohio State University, told Food Safety News that this new development on the part of Cargill was "the most promising food-safety innovation in recent years." And he predicted that the technology would become a key player in food safety.

Ten months later, he echoed similar thoughts in the comments he supplied to Popular Mechanics, pointing out that sauces, fruit juices, guacamole, lunch meats, and fish hold up well to HPP and and that treated versions of these foods can be found in stores today.

He also pointed to falling equipment costs for HPP and the demand for longer shelf life, coupled with a poor consumer acceptance of food irradiation, which he referred to as "HPP's competition" as reasons that HPP will enter into the mainstream.

Turkey piles pressure on Germany to shed light on murders

President Abdullah Gl joined other Turkish leaders on Sunday in asking Germany to shed light on neo-Nazi murders which claimed the lives of nine people, including eight Turkish immigrants and a police officer in Germany since 2006.

The murders came to light by mere chance this past week, and the discovery is extremely troublesome for Germany, since it has emerged that the country’s national intelligence organization was also involved.

The group behind the murders calls itself the National Socialist Underground -- a clear reference to the full name of the Nazis, a contraction of “National Socialists.”

Baheli’s remarks came while he was in Germany’s Essen, where he spoke at the 27th congress of Turkish nationalist foundations in Germany.

Calling the victims “martyrs,” Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutolu on Saturday vowed that Turkey would push for an account of the murders to the very end.

The discovery of the murders shocked both Germany and Turkey.

In her weekly video message on Saturday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for a full investigation into the murders, describing the events as “a disgrace to our country.”

Merkel called for greater cooperation between Germany’s security services. “Authorities must of course keep each other informed. We must look carefully and see whether we can learn something from what has happened,” she said.

Merkel also called for an elimination of hatred, racism, anti-Semitism and neo-Nazism, and expressed her sympathy and regret to the relatives and friends of the victims.

In the wake of the revelations, German police have reopened a number of unsolved cases not originally thought to have been linked to far-right extremists. These include a firebomb attack on Russian Jewish immigrants in Dsseldorf in 2000, a 2004 nail bomb attack in a Cologne immigrant neighborhood and a fire in an apartment building in Ludwigshafen that killed nine Turkish immigrants.

Education budget cuts impact class sizes, teachers and programs

School corporations across the state aren't the only ones affected by budget cuts for K-12 education. From Ball State education students to school district administrators, people all over the state are finding options for keeping the school doors open.

"When a school district has to cut, more than likely, it's not paper clips that are cut or rubber bands," said Mark Burkhart, chief financial officer for Muncie Community Schools. "It's people."

Jason Young, a sixth-grade teacher at Muncie's Northside Middle School, said he applied for Ball State's elementary education master's program to help add some security to his position.

"Im getting my MA because I made it a goal when I began teaching reading," Young said. "Pardon the cliche, but I believe the best ‘job security' is being an awesome teacher. Seeking knowledge and perfecting your craft is all part of it. In the end, if your students are learning, it's going to be hard for a school to let you go."

The number of Indiana's public school teachers has dropped by almost 4 percent in the past three years. The drop resulted from the tax caps made by Gov. Mitch Daniels in an effort to balance the state's budget, about half of which goes to K-12 education.

"One of the downsides to all of the tax revisions is that entities like public schools, libraries and government that are all property tax-based are going to feel the pinch," said Deborah Feick, a special education teacher at Muncie Central High School. While she doesn't feel her job is in jeopardy because of federal requirements to maintain a staff of special education teachers, Feick said some Indiana teachers are feeling threatened with unemployment.

The budget cuts can still make the job search more daunting for college students pursuing degrees in education who are banking on getting jobs in the field after they graduate.

"It's scary," senior elementary education major Sarah Quinn said, "But even if you can't find a job right when you get out of school, I feel like education degrees are so versatile you can use it to find a different job somewhere."

Kendra Meade, senior elementary education major, agreed. She said she plans to graduate with a concentration in reading and said she doesn't regret her decision to pursue a degree in education.

"I'm still happy about it," Meade said. "There's not any other major I'd want to do."

Not all prospective teachers are as optimistic. Enrollment in the Teachers College decreased 8 percent between Fall Semester 2010 and Fall Semester 2011, from 1,491 to 1,369 students, according to an Associated Press report. This decrease is similar to those recorded at other learning institutions around the state and reflects a public awareness about the death of jobs.

Del W. Jarman and Lori G. Boyland, both assistant professors of educational leadership, conducted a study, "The Impacts of Budget Reductions on Indiana's Public Schools," in June.

More than 125 school corporations participated in the study, which reported a total of 1,135 teaching positions cut since 2009. Nearly 450 of those were elementary school teachers and almost 500 of the jobs cut were those of high school teachers. The rest were fine arts teachers, guidance counselors and "media specialists," according to the study.

Muncie schools, like other districts around the state, are dealing with budget cuts for K-12 education. While the number of teachers around the state continues to drop, Muncie officials said they're better equipped to handle the cuts because they've been gradually cutting back for some time.

"We've been pretty aggressive for several years in reducing our expenditures by reducing our spending levels," Burkhart said. "Many schools have been closed – 25 – but six of those facilities are being used by MCS for other things."

As 2009 came to a close, more than 300 already-struggling school systems around the state were bracing themselves for severe budget cuts — $300 million — in an effort to keep the Indiana budget in the black, and those cuts are continuing into this year as well.

Indiana isn't alone. Thirty-three other states have also cut funding for K-12 education, and many more have cut services like health care, assistance for the elderly and disabled, higher education and other areas, according to a report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, an organization focusing on policy programs affecting low to middle-income Americans.

The primary side effect of fewer teachers is larger class sizes. Boyland said her experience as a teacher, administrator and her 16 years as principal in several school corporations throughout Indiana has given her some first-hand insight.

"I know what it's like to have 25 students one year and 33 the next year, and I know how much I can give to all of my kids, and I know there's not as much of you to go around when you have [a larger class]," she said.

Burkhart said class sizes in Muncie have risen, but not enough to really impact the students. For MCS, the minimum class size is 10 students and the larger classes range throughout the mid-20s. Administrators find the smaller classes necessary, especially when it comes to advanced placement classes.

Schools are combining classes that have similar topics or subjects, such as differing levels of the same language courses, to meet the required 10 students.

Burkhart said the administration would rather not combine different level courses and that there isn't enough data to confidently conclude the effects of larger classes on student performance.

"It would be very hard to blame poor test scores on class sizes with the data available now," he said.

Mike Reuter, chief financial officer for Hamilton Southeastern Schools, said the district has grown by 2,400 students in three years,the worldwide Hemorrhoids market is over $56 billion annually. but only six teachers have been hired in that time.

"Under normal circumstances, you figure 2,400 students divided by about 25 per classroom, which is what you'd like, we'd hire 96 teachers," Reuter said. "So, obviously, that's a huge gap."

Franklin Township schools have even cut free transportation to and from school, forcing parents to drive their children or carpool if they can't or won't pay the fees for bus service. Because of this, the parking lots of several Franklin Township schools were in gridlock for the mornings and afternoons of the first days of school. Less than a month ago, Mount Vernon schools also cut transportation.

Burkhart said this may only be the beginning of the list of schools cutting transportation.

"That may be the direction we all go," he said. "Unless there's some relief from the state, I think we're all going to be dealing with that kind of issue."

Reuter said whether schools will continue to lose funds depends on the economy.

"Even with the budget being set for next year, sometimes the money coming in goes down, and you experience mid-year cuts like we have, and that makes it much more difficult," he said.

A professional cellist who lost nearly all of his memory after a virus destroyed parts of his brain has astonished doctors with his remarkable recall of music.

The 71-year-old, known only as PM, had played with a major German orchestra before contracting the infection that devastated his brain's memory centres in 2005.

In PM's case, the virus wiped out large parts of the brain's medial temporal lobes, which are important for remembering events and facts. Details of the case were described at the Society for Neuroscience meeting in Washington DC on Sunday.

Finke decided to investigate PM's memory for music three years ago after a standard test revealed the musician had very severe amnesia.

"This was a unique chance to investigate musical memory, because we knew what sort of music he knew before he got ill," Finke said.

Working with professional musicians, the doctors created a battery of tests to probe PM's memory in more detail. In one, the doctors took well-known pieces of music composed before the cellist fell ill, such as Vivaldi's Four Seasons, and paired them with similar sounding pieces composed after 2005. When PM was asked to say which he knew better, he named the older scores 93% of the time.

In a later test, PM recognised 77% of pieces he had been played earlier in the day, suggesting he had some capacity to learn new music.

"It's easy to explain why he developed severe amnesia, but what is remarkable about this case is that he has intact musical memory," Finke said. "Given his severe amnesia, it is really astonishing that he could learn new musical material."

The case could help doctors understand how different kinds of memories are stored in the brain. Finke cites another patient who in 1996 lost all comprehension for music after having surgery that damaged his superior temporal gyrus.

"Musical memory seems to be stored independently, at least partially, of other types of memory," Finke said.

"If you contrast these two cases, you could argue the superior temporal gyrus, which is intact on the righthand side in our patient, could be the relevant structure that he uses to remember music."

Doctors now hope that PM's ability to learn music can be used to improve his rehabilitation. One idea is to use musical notes to signify people and various tasks, such as taking medicine or calling someone.

"He cannot remember most of the things we will tell him, but musical aspects he can learn and remember, so it might be a gateway to reach this patient and allow him to learn new things," Finke said.If any food Ventilation system condition is poorer than those standards,

Kennewick couple faced cancer together

After spending more than five years battling two kinds of cancer between them, one Kennewick couple not only is happy to be on the other side but also views life quite differently.

Matt Long, 50, was diagnosed in 2004 with non-Hodgkins lymphoma and went through about 30 chemotherapy treatments during more than three years. Just months after he was declared free of the cancer, his wife, Debbie,If any food Ventilation system condition is poorer than those standards, was diagnosed with colon cancer -- and was just a matter of weeks from being terminal.

"I don't even remember one Christmas," he said.

"It's no longer about the materialistic things in life," Debbie said. "It's about sunsets."

Matt agreed, "I have a lot better attitude about life. I look at every day as something extra. Cancer helped me mellow out and made me take things not quite so seriously. It's good to take something positive out of a bad experience."

They also know that early detection is the key to surviving cancer.

"Listen to your body," Debbie said. "Watch for signs. It's not going to hurt to go to the doctor and have something checked out. It's better than ignoring it.

"I'm no longer shy about talking about my colon," she said with a laugh. "A lot of people don't want to get a colonoscopy, but it's nothing to be afraid of. In fact, it might just save your life.ceramic magic cube for the medical,"

Police warn protesters against sleeping on sidewalks

A debate is heating up over where members of Occupy Tampa sleep at night. Study shows college bans helps curb student smoking

Smoke-free air policies on college campuses may reduce students' smoking rates, a recent study found.

Researchers at Indiana University found that smoking was substantially reduced there in the two years after the campus instituted a policy that banned smoking on campus, including outdoor areas.

Colleges in the Chattanooga area have policies that vary in the extent to which they allow smoking in outside areas on campus.

The University of Indiana study shows the smoking rate decreased and smokers smoked less from 2007 to 2009 despite the fact that the policy was minimally enforced, said Dong-Chul Seo, one of the study's authors.

In comparison, the study found that the smoking rates and the number of cigarettes smoked increased during the same time period at Purdue University, where smoking was allowed at least 30 feet from campus facilities.

According to statistics cited in the Indiana study, nationally in 2009 about 22 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds smoked cigarettes. The smoking rate among college students peaked in 1999 and declined throughout the next decade.

Meadows mulch fires in Kearny underscore need for hydrant

Two recent fires that ignited piles of mulch in the Kearny meadows have underscored the need for a fire hydrant to be installed in the area.

Kearny Fire Chief Steve Dyl said warm summer weather often ignites the piles of mulch, which are comprised of organic materials that break down into soil with the presence of heat.

The most recent fires were in the vicinity of the 1-E landfill, a 400-acre expanse that straddles Kearny and North Arlington.
