Nordale Elementary School students celebrate seasons with mosaic project

The season of breakup is more beautiful than most imagine at Nordale Elementary School.

Nordale’s version of the season includes tiny bits of glass and glue arranged into a pattern of the sun shining down on a happy-looking house and a boy riding his scooter.

Students at Nordale are creating masterpieces with bits of glass tile. Artist in Residence Sara Tabbert is teaching students how to make mosaic murals for the school.

“We’re doing the four seasons,” Tabbert explained Monday. In January, kindergarten through sixth-grade students completed three 3-foot-by-5-foot murals — one of fall, one of winter and one with both seasons.There is no de facto standard for an Indoor Positioning System. Lily Brechan, 11, explained why she enjoys spring as she worked on that season’s mural.

“I like it because you get to splash in puddles a lot,” she said.

Recently, Kvutzat Yavneh, a kibbutz east of Ashdod, adopted a new solar technology inspired by Faiman's ideas. This year, the technology was exported to South Korea, and next year there are plans to ship the panels to Italy and China. The improved panels promise higher energy yields, reduced land use, lower per-unit costs and less environmental damage.

Faiman was born in Amersham, a small town outside of London, as German bombs were being dropped on British cities during World War II. "I like to think that our grandchildren will find it hard to believe that we lived in a world in which electricity was not generated mainly from solar energy," says Faiman. "Just as my own grandfather, who was born in Russia in 1872, once expressed amazement to me that most people no longer know how to ride a horse."

Faiman is concerned about the effects that the country's consumption and population growth rates will have on Israel's energy requirements and its announced target of ten per cent renewables by 2020. "This straight line that has been rising for last 20 years at a rate close to two billion kiloWatt hours per year, reached 60 billion last year. The ten per cent goal, out of a projected total of 80 billion, is eight billion, and with ten years to arrive at that figure, that would mean mandating an annual increase of 0.8 billion kiloWatt hours produced per year. The main reason that solar technologies have not yet been adopted en masse, in Israel and around the world, is that up until now the cost of producing electricity using solar panels has exceeded the cost of producing electricity by burning fossil fuels. Faiman and his colleagues hit upon a novel method for reducing panel production costs: separating the two functions of collecting energy and converting energy.

Fast running out of money just two years after winning a half-billion dollars in federal loan guarantees, solar panel maker Solyndra LLC this spring looked overseas to India in hopes of finding new business to turn the company around.

But Solyndra's hiring of the Rice Hadley Group does show that even as its finances were growing increasingly dire, the company continued spending on well-connected consultants and lobbyists as it sought to convince politicians and potential customers alike that its prospects were bright.

Six weeks before Solyndra announced it was broke, the company hired the Glover Park Group, a Washington lobbying firm founded by former Clinton administration officials, to help arrange meetings between company officials and members of Congress.

In addition to its team of in-house lobbyists, Solyndra hired three other Washington lobbying firms in recent years: McAllister & Quinn, Washington Tax Group and McBee Strategic Consulting. McAllister & Quinn filed papers last week terminating its ties to Solyndra. Others are likely to follow.

Putting the "bling" in your garden

How can you improve on Mother Nature? Any gardener knows this isn't possible, but eco-friendly garden art can complement and enhance nature's beauty.

Graphic artist Karen Hancock has transformed her passion for vintage glass and crystal into an art form. Taking recycling to a whole new level,Graphene is not a semiconductor, not an oil paintings for sale , and not a metal, she assembles one-of-a-kind pieces from carefully chosen flea market, garage sale and second-hand store finds into glittering "garden bling."

"Art has been important to me all my life," said Hancock, who is an art director at AT&T Advertising Solutions. "I've always had some sort of project going on, and I absolutely love glass of all kinds."

Browsing online, Hancock was inspired by a sculpture ornament she stumbled upon and came up with the idea of creating glass "flowers" as garden ornaments made by layering plates and dishes. The flower then would be attached to an R-bar stem so that it could be planted in a garden.

As Hancock's interest grew, she realized she could create more elaborate compositions that would give new life to gently worn pieces of glass.

She incorporates whatever catches her eye as something special, using an assortment of vases, plates, candle holders, juice glasses, compotes, bottles and jars. She even layers in colored glass to offer a more vibrant accent to a gardenscape.

Using silicone glue, Hancock adheres the pieces together before affixing them on tubing, which is inserted into the ground for stability.

Part of the fun for her, she said, is the hunt for the right piece.

"Sometimes I find half of a candy dish that will make a great topper," she said. "Or deviled egg plates make a natural petal."

Her one rule of thumb,These girls have never had a cube puzzle in their lives! though, is to only use heavy pieces that can withstand the vagaries of weather.

"I made one for my mother, and she called me to ask if she should bring it inside, because it was hailing," Hancock said. "I told her she needed to worry about herself, and the piece would be fine."

The only limitation she believes is sub-freezing temperatures, suggesting that people bring the pieces inside during the winter months.

Hancock said that she enjoys the whole process of laying pieces out in her kitchen, to experimenting with different combinations and finally to assembling them into a flower, totem or free-standing form.

"One of the challenges I have is that I don't want people to be able to pick out the individual pieces when they look at one of my sculptures," she said. "The pieces take on a whole new look in the garden, especially when the sun is shining on them."

She has made several larger pieces that double as either bird-feeders or birdbaths.

Ideas for new combinations come to her all the time, and she is beginning to think more adventurously in terms of themes for her sculptures.

When her sister remarried, a friend suggested that she make her a "garden bling" wedding cake. She is also working on an angel and a snowman.

While she's not quite sure what she'll do, she's on the lookout for pieces that she can use.

"I love it when people come to me with ideas," she said. "Someone else has asked me to make something from her mother's glassware that she was thinking of giving away. This way, she can have a very sentimental memorial to her mother in her garden."

So taken with her pieces, Chuck and Joan Sheppard of Godfrey commissioned Hancock to make several for them in preparation of their garden being featured on this year's Pride Inc. Garden Tour.

"I'm more at home in the tech sector," he said. "To get an exposure to what motivates venture capitalists is very helpful."

Helpful, but also a reality check. Maine is striving to develop renewable energy industries around wind, ocean and biomass power, but its small businesses face stiff challenges in attracting private investment, the experts said.

Among the reasons:

--Clean technology investing is relatively young, and profit models are still being tested.

--Investors are looking for breakthrough ideas with global applications, not incremental advances of local interest.

The back end of a cow provides the front end of the green-energy business that Kevin Maas is slowly expanding in Western Washington and Oregon.

With missionary zeal, he and his brother Daryl build modest electricity-producing projects that help family-owned dairy farms preserve their key role in the agricultural ecosystem.

Their company, Farm Power, turns manure into electricity, fertilizer and bacteria-free animal bedding. The technology is fairly simple. What's hard about a manure digester is linking farmers, bankers, regulators, environmentalists and utilities.

"An urban liberal would get laughed off the farm" for trying to convince risk-averse dairymen they can save money while benefiting the environment, said the lanky, bearded 35-year-old.

But with rural roots, as well as an MBA, Maas seems uniquely suited to the task.

"Whether anyone else could have carried this off I don't know," said Don Wick, executive director of the Skagit County Economic Development Association in Mount Vernon, Wash. "I had to admire their tenacity and boldness. They really believed in this."

"It's tragic," Maas said.

"It was really exciting to see these $2 million projects going in, and local guys owned them," Maas said.

Being local boys helped. "The Maas family comes with a great reputation in the community. I've known the father for years," Wick said.

Maas said he was confident Farm Power could pull it off, but "there were times that were a little scary" -- like discovering the utility lines to deliver their electricity to Puget Sound Energy would require a six-figure upgrade.

Two adjacent dairy farmers, who milk 1,200 cows, agreed to supply the manure. Farm Power's initial project opened in August 2009.

Burning that potent greenhouse gas, Farm Power's Mount Vernon and Lynden, Wash., generators produce enough electricity for about 1,000 homes. The methane kept out of the atmosphere equals the annual greenhouse-gas emissions of 3,000 cars.

The digesters also yield nutrient-rich liquid fertilizer and pathogen-free fiber -- straw and such that survived the cows' digestive process -- which farmers use for bedding in their dairy barns. The two Mount Vernon farms save about $100,000 a year because they don't need to buy straw or sawdust for cow bedding, Maas said.

"It's just a big old circle. And when it's done right, that circle is very beneficial to us," said Jason Vander Kooy, 35, whose dairy sits north of the Mount Vernon digester. "We're very happy with it."
