When Samantha Stanley and Brooke Mankin decided to room together at Indiana University, they started planning their dorm decor.
"We got together and split up the big stuff like the microwave and refrigerator," said Stanley, who will study exercise science and pre-physical therapy. "Then we picked a day, got all our coupons together and went to about five different stores," said Mankin, who is planning a career in speech pathology. The two college freshmen graduated from Franklin Central and have been friends since fifth grade.
Like many new college students, they are shopping for a mix of creature comforts and necessities.
Many stores such as Target and Bed Bath & Beyond offer college gift registries and checklists to help streamline the process.
Aside from electronics and small appliances, the lists include storage units and bedding.
According to the National Retail Federation, the average student will spend about $800 getting ready for college -- that includes everything from apparel to dorm furnishings.
Stanley and Mankin, both 18, chose matching reversible comforters in green and blue, adding rugs, storage containers and lamps to complete their home away from home.

Dakota Slaughter, 18, is keeping his eye out for bargains. An employee of Kohl's, the Fishers High School graduate moves onto the University of Alabama campus this month. He'll take along plaid bedding and new sets of towels purchased during a one-day sale.
