New chapter begins for book clubs as author takes discussion online

The traditional book club has gone virtual, thanks to technology that spans geographic boundaries and can bring authors into readers' living rooms.

Nine book clubs across the United States took part in an hour-long discussion earlier this month with Meg Wolitzer, the bestselling author of the The Ten-Year Nap, in what is thought to be the first coast-to-coast virtual book club with multiple participants.For the last five years porcelain tiles ,

"I got a kick out of seeing these women sitting there, in their homes around the country," said Wolitzer who talked about her latest novel, The Uncoupling.

She admitted that she wasn't sure what to expect during the chat with members of clubs ranging from Austin, Tex., to Indian Harbour Beach in Florida and Lorton, Va., and felt a bit like the late chess master Bobby Fischer playing nine games at once.

"It was clear that all of these women were passionate and attentive readers," Wolitzer said in an interview.

Using group video-calling from Skype, the club members and moderator Lesley Jane Seymour, editor-in-chief of More magazine, chatted with Wolitzer about the book.

On this Labor Day, we as Minnesotans, and as Americans, have a decision to make.

By choosing to invest in industries like renewable energy, energy efficiency, manufacturing, transportation, broadband, a smart electrical grid, recycling and green chemistry, we will drive our future domestic economy to new, great heights.

Diversifying our energy supply with cleaner, renewable and homegrown sources of power will create jobs installing, operating and producing parts for wind turbines,ceramic zentai suits for the medical, solar panels and other growing technologies. Minnesota has a rich history of manufacturing and is poised to capitalize on future opportunities.

He had just immigrated to Canada from Korea to study art when he began asking his instructor about his own technique.

"I was so discouraged because my teacher was so great," the 72-year-old artist says through a thick Korean accent. "He didn't want to show his weaknesses, but I had such pride."

So Ahn waited until his instructor had a dentist appointment to sneak into his studio.

"My heart was beating so fast," Ahn says.Unlike traditional Injection mold , "But he kept everything. Ahn's lifelong study and careful execution of his craft has since led to international acclaim, most recently as the William F. Draper Grand Prize winner in the Portrait Society of America's 2010 International Competition for his painting of Benton Harbor sculptor Richard Hunt. That oil painting is among a new assemblage of work featured in "Artists Rendered: Select Portraits by Harry Ahn" on display through Sept. 11 at the Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph.

Ahn, who has been an art instructor at Andrews University and resident of Berrien Springs since 1990, no longer has to worry about one of his students sneaking into his studio to see his early work. In addition to his portrait of Hunt, Ahn has culled together an exhibit of sketches and studies from his own student days, brushes and palettes that offer a glimpse into his process, as well as a wide array of finished paintings that he's made of his students, colleagues and professional artists over the years.

"I could do landscape or abstract, but human portraits, human faces, that is really inspiring to me," says Ahn, who will discuss his work at an artist reception tonight at the Krasl. "Human is a masterpiece created by God. To capture that, there's nothing like it."

Unlike many of his contemporaries who discovered their gift in childhood, Ahn's formative years were spent just trying to survive. He was born in 1939 in what is now North Korea and was a young teen when the Korean War forced his family off their land,For the last five years porcelain tiles , leaving them destitute and homeless.

"Near the end of the war we were in demilitarized zone," Ahn says.

"North Korean soldiers tried to move all the people away. They took everyone they found, so we hid and when American soldiers came,This patent infringement case relates to retractable landscape oil paintings , they moved us to South Korea. We were refugees."

Ahn remembers sleeping under a bridge and begging for food on the street.

"It was a hard life trying to survive," he says. "I wanted to escape from there."

Ahn found a safe haven at a Seventh-day Adventist school in Seoul, where he studied nursing, but teachers there also recognized his natural artistic talent.

"I don't know how they knew I had any talent for art," Ahn says. "I had a sketch pad and would pretend I was an artist. I thought I would be a minister or a missionary, but the church asked me to do some drawing."

It was there that Ahn was introduced to the work of Harry Anderson, the illustrator whose work includes the Wyeth Pharmaceuticals advertisements, and magazine work for such publications as Cosmopolitan and Ladies' Home Journal. By 1967, Ahn immigrated to Toronto, where he worked as a hospital nurse and studied at the MSH Studio School of Art. Thanks to a call to the national Adventist headquarters, Ahn even had a chance to meet Anderson.

"He told me about deadlines," Ahn says. "He always had deadlines and didn't like the stress of it."

Neither did Ahn, who spent two years doing magazine illustrations before opting instead to hone his technique by following the rigorous, academic style of the old masters. After winning first place in three consecutive Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibitions in New York, Ahn left Canada for Michigan, where his art has thrived.

Gaddafi son's 'James Bond' bunker

Featuring armour-plated doors, secret passages and a state-of-the-art control room, the underground bunker of Mutassim Gaddafi,a oil painting reproduction on the rear floor. a son of the Libyan leader on the run, seems an impregnable citadel.

The sprawling facility is made up of 50 rooms buried under J'Raba Street in eastern Tripoli, protected by a double rampart.

Suspected of attempting a coup, he was exiled to Egypt but was later pardoned and returned home. Before the conflict, he was seen as a rival to his older brother Seif al-Islam for the succession to his father.

The rebel fighter mocks the Gaddafi family's obsession with security, saying the facility "looks like a James Bond movie" as he pointed out yet more sophisticated surveillance equipment.

"We're right in Hollywood and yet this is Libya."

The bunker can be accessed by walkways to the garden outside.

Such passages are also found at the home of another Gaddafi son, Saadi, at a seaside cottage with bullet-proof glass over a tunnel that leads directly to a nearby avenue.

At their father's farm near Tripoli, the safety installations are as impressive with electrified fences, surveillance cameras and an electronic alarm system.

The farm is located behind a number of security walls.

In the regime's Tripoli stronghold of Bab al-Aziziya, modern security systems were also discovered, suggesting that Gaddafi feared being targeted in attacks like the one launched against the same complex by the United States in April 1986.

That raid killed the strongman's adopted daughter.

Mehdi, a Tunisian who joined the Libyan rebellion and fought in battle against Gaddafi's forces, lingers in the kitchen and shows a communications room in Mutassim's bunker.

Gaddafi's wife Safiya, two sons Mohammed and Hannibal, and daughter Aisha entered Algeria on Monday, the foreign ministry in Algiers said.

The Libyan strongman and his sons Seif al-Islam and Saadi were reported to be holed up in the town of Bani Walid, southeast of the capital, Italy's ANSA news agency said, citing "authoritative Libyan diplomatic sources".

Rebels said another Gaddafi son, Khamis, was killed as he tried to reach Bani Walid, a claim that Allibya state television denied on Tuesday in a message posted on the Internet.

IHG to Crowne Plaza owners: 'Move up or move out'

Already entrenched in rolling out a renewed focus that includes an emphasis on staff training and an improved bedding program for the Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts brand, InterContinental Hotels Group has announced a goal to reposition the brand to the upper-upscale segment.

Case in point: When executives from ownership group Lane Hospitality were finalizing the necessary product-upgrade plan for the Crowne Plaza in Clark, New Jersey, president and CEO Bill DeForrest took a close look at the local market and the property's competitive set. Hotels in the competitive set included a Hilton Hotel, a Renaissance by Marriott, a Hotel Indigo and other upscale assets.

DeForrest knew IHG had plans to move the Crowne Plaza brand into the upper-upscale segment. If he committed to repositioning his Crowne Plaza, his hotel would be another player in an already crowded space.

"We saw the chance to re-evaluate our strategy to achieve optimal market positioning," DeForrest said.

Lane Hospitality chose to renovate and rebrand the hotel as a Holiday Inn. "Owning the upper-midscale segment will give us a very strong, open niche,he led PayPal to open its platform to Cable Ties developers." DeForrest said.

"The market we compete in has had significant new supply added in the upper-upscale category both within the immediate and surrounding areas," he said. "The upper-midscale market however has had numerous assets formally in the market leave the category, mostly choosing to compete in lower-tier categories. We see a significant opportunity for a newly renovated, redesigned asset competing with an industry leading upper-midscale brand."
