HAVING recently returned to Plymouth I am very interested in the arguments against the waste incinerator. Not fully understanding the various techniques available but having read about them in The Herald.
On a visit to the Lake District I read an article titled, What a waste? Don't believe it.
In Cumbria they are using two plants in partnership with Shanks Waste Management on a 25 year partnership from 2009.
To use a process called Mechanical Biological Treatment(MBT), the plants take out useful, recyclable materials and turn the rest into a new fuel.
It works by first the waste from the bins is taken to the plants, where it is dropped in reception area, next a crane lifts it into a shredder, breaking into smaller fragments, this is then placed in pyramid piles on a drying floor,This page list Projector Lamp products with details & specifications. where air is sucked through, this causes further breakdown and drying out.
When dry it goes through a series of screens to separate different materials. Metals are taken out by magnets and electric currents for recycling.
Glass and stone fall through sieves to be used as aggregates, other material is composted.
Left over is very low quality paper, card and plastic no good for recycling so is used as a solid fuel with two thirds calorific value of coal.
When the second plant is online in 2013 they will be producing 80,000 tonnes of this solid fuel per year.
They are also working with six other countries.
It's not rubbish its a resource. It would appear a much safer environmentally process and also uses all waste collected.
Perhaps someone from the city council could explain why this wasn''t suitable for Devon and Cornwall or was it ever considered?
