City youths headed to college need lots of supplies, from backpacks to bedding

Quindell Palmer stopped by the office of On Point for College Tuesday to pick up a new backpack, bedsheets, notebooks, pencils and other supplies he will need when he goes to college for the first time next month.

Palmer, 19, a recent Fowler High School graduate, said the help from On Point is important because his mother is moving to Mississippi to take care of his grandmother and won't be around to help him get ready for school. He will attend Monroe Community College.

"On Point will step in for my mom because she will be so far away and they will help me with all the last minute stuff," Palmer said.

For 13 years the nonprofit has helped more than 2,700 inner-city youths go to more than 200 colleges and universities. Most of the students are the first in their families to attend college. On Point provides supplies, counseling, help filling out financial aid forms, transportation to and from college and other assistance to help students get to college and succeed. It also takes them shopping for clothes they need in school. On Point's mission is to break down the barriers that hinder many inner-city youths from attending college.

"We do not turn anybody away," said Ginny Donohue, founder and executive director of On Point.

On Point is preparing to send 360 students to college at the end of the summer and it is asking the public to help by donating supplies.
