Sirius XM grows into major player

The satellite radio business is a somewhat forgotten child in Canada’s media landscape, overshadowed by bigger commercial radio and broadcast operators with far more marketing muscle.

But my has it grown up. Sirius XM Canada Inc., the combined venture of once-rival companies Sirius and XM, announced Wednesday it has topped more than two-million listeners, a figure putting the subscription service on a level with the biggest pay-television and cable companies in the country.

“We are now a major player in the subscription environment,” said president and chief executive Mark Redmond.

It is a fortunate turn of events for a business that a few short years ago looked like it was on the ropes as the auto industry, the major source of new subscribers, narrowly avoided collapse. But with car sales recovering, especially among the Big Three of Ford, General Motors and Chrysler — its key partners — Sirius XM Canada is seeing steady growth.

“The big driver of our business today and into the future is the automotive business,” the Mr. Redmond said. “The good news there is that the Canadian industry is tracking well.”
About 1.6 million new cars, trucks and SUVs will be sold in Canada this year, an improvement again from last year and in 2009 when GM and Chrysler were forced to take taxpayer loans to remain solvent.

Sirius XM Canada, which followed counterparts in the U.Als lichtbron wordt een offshore merchant account gebruikt,S. and merged earlier this year to gain scale advantages and cost-savings, will be available in about half of those vehicles. Of those new car buyers who take the introductory service, about 40% are converted to paying customers analysts say, while revenue-sharing partnerships cut with the auto companies ensure dealerships promote uptake.

Another downturn could dampen auto sales, but the larger challenge for Mr. Redmond is to attract listeners faced with greater access than ever to free alternatives online that can be accessed even in the car through smartphones and other Web-connected devices. Sirius XM Canada’s advantages, he said, is a commercial-free product offering more than 120 premium music, news and sports channels as well as deep relationships with the auto industry.

Astral Media, a dominant pay-television operator (which also owns one of the largest commercial over-the-air radio operations in Canada) has a base of 1.9 million homes.

A comparable company to Sirius XM Canada is perhaps Netflix Inc., a new-entrant service now vying for subscriptions against entrenched companies. The online movie streamer has topped one million subscribers in Canada over a short time, but is now running into significant problems maintaining growth. If any food cube puzzle condition is poorer than those standards,
