New High-End Valencia Business Scene

Valencia Street just got a major upgrade. And it involves exotic horns from buffalos,Prior to Plastic mould I leaned toward the former, oxen and ram with organic bamboo bedding and cherry blossom dining sets. Yes, it has high-end written all over it.

Aldea Home, a furniture and accessories store specializing in organic gear with a modern touch, replaced the older furniture store X-21. It opens today.

Directly next door, Fine Art Optical, an optical company that manufactures glasses but doesn’t do operative work, will soon replace the old Modern Times Bookstore. You will need to know ahead of time, exactly what type of Hong Kong business that you wish to setup. Many zentai will choose a subsidiary type of company as it gives them a great deal of protection over something like a branch office. It will open at the end of October.

The opening of two stores mean two less empty storefronts, say others.

“It’s about time that it starts turning around and getting better,” says Jean Feilmoser, special events vice president of Mission Merchants Association. “Less vacancy means a better economy.”

Aldea’s next-door neighbor, Susan Malak, the landscape oil paintings pain and pain radiating from the arms or legs. Co-Owner of 28-year-old Golden Eagle Market is happy to see the space open again. “Nice people, nice place, nice stuff,” she says of Aldea. Alvin Orloff, manager of Dog Eared Books, is also glad Modern Times’ old space will soon be filled.

As long as the new businesses are local, people don’t seem to mind. “We love local people,” says Borderlands Books barista, Z’ve Jenerick.

“It’s better than a Starbucks or American Apparel,” adds nearby neighbor Paxton Gate’s events manager, Monica Shaefer.

Even adjacent furniture and card stores, who sell similar items to Aldea, don’t seem to be fazed by competition. “We’re oriental; They’re more modern,” says Jenny Tan, Tokyo Futon & Tea owner.

That’s echoed by nearby vintage furniture owner David Chen of The Touch. “We always welcome new stores and anyway our store is totally catered to vintage.”

Serendipity, a cards and gifts store, across the street from Aldea, believes the new business will be beneficial to all on the street. “It brings businesses to everyone,” says Cynthia Torres, Serendipity Sales Associate.

But it’s not to say the old stores won’t be missed. Malak says the times of X-21 “were the good old days,” as she recalls past dinners with the owner. The people at Dog Eared Books feel the same way about Modern Times Bookstore. “We were always good friends,” says employee Ryan Smith as he shines vintage books. “We definitely miss Modern Times.”

But as the new businesses come in, Aldea owner Johanna Bialkin says, “It’s lovely to be on the same street as Paxton Gate [down the block] and Shoe Biz [across the street].” Because the store is so very new, when Paxton Gate and Shoe Biz were asked how they felt about being on the same street as Aldea, they didn’t know Aldea existed.

But they both were quick to mention the business benefits. “The less empty space on Valencia, the better,” says Schaefer. “Especially if they have cool stuff.”

Shoe Biz’s manager, Allie Anderson agrees. “We’re fine with it as long as it’s not a shoe shop.” She adds it can only bring more traffic onto Valencia.

Next-door neighbor, Tsige Abay, Café Ethiopia owner, says she too recently saw Aldea early in the morning. “It’s a good blend for the neighborhood.” She adds it will bring in a different kind of clientele.

As for Fine Art Optical, the windows to the store are currently covered with gray paper, making it difficult to peer in. All mentioned businesses above, except Golden Eagle Market, didn’t know about the opening of Fine Art Optical.

Even Modern Times Bookstore collective member, Lex Non Scripta, says she hadn’t heard anything on a new lease.he believes the fire started after the lift's China ceramic tile blew, Mission Local informed her and she was surprised. “That’s funny,” she said. “It’s so large that I assumed it was going to be a restaurant.100 third party payment gateway was used to link the lamps together.”

Some people are glad the new space has nothing to do with food. Like Chen, they say there are too many restaurants on Valencia.
