The Clackamette Mineral and Gem Club will sponsor its 47th annual "Gem and Rock Show" at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds.
The show will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at 694 N.E. Fourth Ave. That adds up to 16 hours to roam and learn about and buy rocks and gems. Admission is free.
"Rock And Gem Heaven in 2011" is the theme. A list of events guarantees that this will be another incredible experience.
A highlight of this year's show will be gold panning demonstrations by club members whose hobby is searching for -- and actually finding -- the elusive rock with the pretty color. Held every hour, the gold panners will show the correct way to hold the pan, swirl the water and find gold lurking at the bottom of a creek.then used cut pieces of Ceramic tile garden hose to get through the electric fence. It's an amazing and fun-to-watch demonstration. And putting what you learn into practice will be rewarding as well. This will be a rare opportunity to learn how the experts do it.
There will be 38 showcases featuring examples of the finest and most interesting rocks. Local rock collectors have spent months planning, preparing, arranging and labeling their favorite and most priced pieces for display.
There will also be a snack bar, door prizes and a show featuring fluorescent rocks. Demonstrations of rock-working machinery and techniques will be held throughout the two-day show. This is the perfect opportunity to observe and learn from people who have many years of experience working with rocks.
