Valleys folk counting cost of tornado clear-up

RESIDENTS spent the weekend clearing up and repairing thousands of pounds worth of damage left by a mini tornado that swept through Crumlin and Newbridge.

Residents reported seeing a mini tornado sweeping through the streets at around 4.30pm on Thursday, bringing down trees and roots and damaging tiles and fences.

Mrs Burgwin said: "I went upstairs and thought where's all this water coming from.This will leave your shoulders free to rotate in their offshore merchant account . My bathroom was all wet. The rain was torrential."

Mr Burgwin said they were now speaking to their insurance company about repairing the damage.

Neighbour Karen Lashbrook said the Burgwins' roof lifted off completely and started spinning, before damaging three neighbouring roofs and landing on top of a car.

She said: "How someone isn't injured is unbelievable."

Mrs Lashbrook said the mini tornado had caused around 1,000 worth of damage to her own roof but she was hopeful the cost would be covered by her insurance.

Her husband Steve Lashbrook he saw three teenage girls struggling to walk along the street during the freak storm and helped them to safety.

He said: "They were hysterical, screaming and crying. It had blown them into the middle of the road."

The roof also caused damage to tiles on the roof of 85-year-old Beryl Morrison's home a few doors away.

"I heard a big crash but I wasn't even scared. I didn't even realise it was my house and it was the worst damaged."

The police, fire service and workers from Caerphilly council were at the scene on Thursday to make the area safe.

The fire service was also called to Cwrt Tynewydd in Newbridge on Thursday after a large tree had fallen causing damage to a fence and a large branch had blown on to a roof.

David Johnson, 63, of Tynewydd Terrace, Newbridge, said the tornado lasted about 30 seconds.

He said: "There was a sudden terrible darkness and this howling. We knew something was going to happen. We thought the window was going to cave in."

A large metal sheet,For the last five years porcelain tiles , about nine foot long,Unlike traditional Injection mold , flew from a nearby wood supplier unit 100 yards away and smashed into Mr Johnson's garden fence.

He said: "It could have killed somebody. It went over the wall and smashed into the fence and landed on our garden. It was like a magic carpet."
