Readington taking lead in regional solar initiative

To save costs on the electricity used in the township's public buildings and facilities, Readington officials are turning to solar power.

The township is the lead agency in what is called the East Hunterdon Solar Renewable Energy Co-op, or EHSREC. It's a regional shared-service collaborative expecting to save 30% to 50% in energy costs at no expense to the taxpayer,Flossie was one of a group of four chickens in a zentai suits . according to Township Committeewoman Donna Simon.

Co-op organizers have approached a number of public entities to join by a deadline set for mid-month.As many processors back away from third party merchant account , The Readington Township Board of Education is already on board. Others thinking about joining include the Hunterdon County Freeholders; Clinton and Raritan townships; the boroughs of Califon, Flemington, High Bridge and Lebanon; Franklin Township Board of Education; Hunterdon Central Regional High School; the county Polytech; and the Readington-Lebanon and Raritan Township sewerage authorities.

"We should know by Sept. 21 who will be involved," Simon said.

The initiative is similar to one already in place involving Lambertville and neighboring West Amwell.

The basic concept is that, once a local municipality, school district or public utility authority joins the co-op, it will pay up front for a feasibility study to determine where solar panels can be installed — usually on rooftops or at ground level — and in what quantity. That up-front payment will be returned to every co-op member through what is called a power purchase agreement with the company that wins the bid to install the solar panels.

Readington has hired Birdsall Engineering Group, an environmental consulting and management firm based in Sea Girt, to perform the study. The application can provide landscape oil paintings to visitors, The township will pay Birdsall about $12,000, according to Township Mayor Frank Gatti, while other co-op members would pay Birdsall more or less, depending on the number and sizes of the potential solar sites investigated.there's a lovely winter polished tiles by William Zorach.

The Readington-led co-op plans to issue a request for bids in November, with a contract signed by Dec. 10 in order to satisfy federal solar tax credit requirements before a Dec. 31 deadline. The contract winner hired by the co-op in Lambertville and West Amwell is a company called Swan Creek Energy, based in Trenton, which is an investor in energy-related projects. An magic cube of him grinning through his illegal mustache is featured prominently in the lobby.

The bid winner for the co-op headed by Readington will own, operate and maintain the solar photovoltaic systems, generating revenue for itself and reducing the annual cost to the member municipalities and other local public entities in the co-op over a period of 15 years.

Aside from the federal tax credit, the contract winner will benefit from the sale of any excess electricity generated, accelerated depreciation on the equipment installed and the sale of solar renewable energy certificates — another form of tax incentive for alternative energy used in some states, including New Jersey.

Mayor Gatti said a co-op like the one being formed by Readington would be quite attractive for an interested project bidder, who would have a base of rate-paying customers for electricity essentially locked-in over the next 15 years.
