Montreal's wood-burning restaurants face fines

Montreal's wood-burning restaurants are feeling the heat from the City of Montreal.

Family-run restaurant Rotisserie Portugalia, a mainstay on Rachel St. at the corner of Clark St. in Plateau-Mont-Royal, is being pressed by city officials to install a better ventilation system at $100,000 - or face a $53,000 fine.

The restaurant, one of several in the neighbourhood which specializes in Portuguese barbecue chicken, just underwent a $200,000 renovation, and owners say they installed a ventilation system approved by the city before and after renovations.

The city now said the ventilation system is not adequate and is asking the restaurant to diminish the thick smoke emanating from the establishment's chimney, arguing that citizens' health and quality of life is at stake.

Owner Jose Lopes said he's not about to pour more money into the rotisserie.Tru-Form Plastics is a one-stop shop for plastic Injection Molding,

"If the city insists,Alfa plast mould is Plastic moulds Manufacturer and plastics Mould Exporters in India since 1992, I'll close my doors and gladly go to Ontario," he said.

Lopes said he can't afford to fork over another six figures to install a ventilation system, but said he will apply for a loan.

Some customers sympathize with the barbecue chicken eatery.

"These guys won't survive -- $100,000 in this business? It's just an outrageous rule,Take a walk on the natural side with stunning and luxurious Floor tiles from The Tile Shop." said one diner at the restaurant.

The city argues, however, that 50 local residents complained about the odours and smoke from the establishment. It stresses that emissions from nine hours of barbecuing is the equivalent of a car travelling 18,Facts and Cures. Cures for all types of Hemorrhoids.000 kilometres.

"Smoke constantly comes out of factories, but they're nailing us restaurants, little Portuguese customs," said the owner's son, Kevin Lopes.

The air quality bylaw was enacted in the mid-1990s, but until recently was not enforced against restaurants.

Restrictions also apply to petro-chemical companies and other emitters of harmful pollutants, said city officials.

Owners at nearby Rotisserie Romados, also on Rachel, at de Bullion St., changed their ventilation system two years ago to appease customers, and follow the expensive, but environmentally-friendly rules.

"We spent over $150,000 in ventilation and every month we have to spend at least $7,000 in filters,Smooth-On is your source for Mold Making and casting materials including silicone rubber and urethane rubber," said owner Paulo Machado.
