Floriculture sales top $178 million in N.J.

Fisher visited Timothy's Center for Gardening in Robbinsville to announce the results of the survey conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Floriculture crops include bedding plants, such as flowering annuals, and also cut flowers, chrysanthemums, hostas, lilies, poinsettias and foliage plants.

The survey showed that New Jersey ranked eighth in the nation in expanded wholesale value of floriculture crops, just behind neighboring New York, but outpacing Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Bedding and garden plants sales were $110.5 million, an increase of 3 percent from a year earlier. New Jersey also had $12.4 million in cut flower sales, up from $11.4 million in 2009.

Dominick Mondi, executive director of the New Jersey Nursery and Landscape Association, said the survey shows that floriculture is a viable industry in New Jersey and, along with other horticultural products and services,is the 'solar panel revolution' upon us? is a great contributor to the local economy.

Timothy's Center for Gardening grows annuals, perennials and fall mums on one and a half acres. Timothy Serinese is the third generation in the business, which was started by his grandfather, father and uncle on the same location in 1965.

Hermes Datacomms Middle East developments accelerate

Included in these expansion plans is the recent appointment of Marc Merchant as Account Manager on the BP account and Thualfikar Ammar Hassan as Technical Manager, Iraq.

Merchant will be based in Dubai, where he will be responsible for developing the BP account in Iraq, London and Dubai, with extensive travel across these regions. His responsibility will be to not only manage and build on the strong existing relationship with BP, but also to plan and present new solutions, and identify key areas for advancement across the account.

Merchant has worked in the telecommunications industry for the past 14 years. He brings with him a broad wealth of experience and skills including technology, project management and account management. Prior to joining Hermes, Merchant worked in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on the NGN project as the Key Account Manager, where his clients included MOI, BAE, Banking and Technology.

Hassan will be based in Basra with potential visits to other Middle East destinations. As Technical Manager, he will be responsible for developing and progressing Hermes Iraq office in order to most effectively support customer and overall business needs in the region. In this role, Hassan will manage in country engineering to maintain SLA's for new and existing customers. He will manage the day-to-day operational aspects, develop engineering solutions, support and troubleshooting as well as maintain, monitor and improve Hermes quality standards in Iraq.

Hassan is an Iraqi national and brings with him over eleven years experience within the satellite and telecommunications industry, where he previously held management positions within companies including Aljazeera al Arabia Telecom, MIT, Crescent Telecom, Lucent Technology and Nashita. His in-depth technical knowledge, management skills and proven ability to establish operations in the emerging Iraq market make him an ideal candidate for this role.
